U.S. Women’s National Team to play China in December friendly at DRV PNK Stadium

The U.S. Women’s National Team will close out the year with a pair of December friendlies against China, including a Dec. 2 game at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.

The match, scheduled for 3 p.m. (TNT, Universo, Peacock) will be the team’s second at Inter Miami’s home stadium, and the latest in a long history of matchups between the two national teams. Team USA and China have met 58 times, including in the 1996 Olympic gold medal game and the 1999 Women’s World Cup, both of which the Americans won.

It will be their first meeting in five years.

The U.S. vs. China game could mark the debut of the yet-to-be-named new U.S. head coach. U.S. Soccer and former coach Vlatko Andonovski parted ways after the 2023 World Cup, where Team USA made its earliest exit ever at a World Cup or Olympics, after losing in the Round of 16 to Sweden on penalty kicks.

Matt Crocker, the new U.S. Soccer sporting director, has said he would like to have the new coach in place by December. If that timeline holds, the new coach could be on the DRV PNK Stadium sideline.

Among the potential candidates who have come up in media reports: Sarina Wiegman, who led England to the 2023 World Cup final; Emma Hayes of Chelsea, who previously coached at the U.S. collegiate level; Tony Gustavsson, a former U.S. assistant coach who became head coach of Australia; Lluis Cortes, the former FC Barcelona women’s coach; Laura Harvey of the NWSL’s OL Reign; and Lorne Donaldson, who led Jamaica to the 2023 World Cup knockout round despite limited funding.

China is coming off a fourth consecutive Women’s World Cup appearance and, like the U.S. team, is looking to get back to glory days. China did not advance from the group stage, losing 1-0 to Denmark on a 90th minute goal, defeating Haiti 1-0 on a late penalty kick and losing 6-1 to England.

Prior to the game against China, the USA will face Colombia on Oct. 26 in Sandy, Utah and on Oct. 29 in San Diego.
