UA Says New Student Coronavirus Cases Remain Low

TUSCALOOSA, AL. — New cases among students remains low across the three-school University of Alabama System, according to the latest numbers published Friday.

The UA System's COVID-19 Dashboard reports 101 new student cases across the three campuses, with 34 confirmed in Tuscaloosa over the last week — marking the lowest number of new cases reported over a week of testing since students returned to campus in August.

To date, the University of Alabama has confirmed 2,612 coronavirus cases among students.

On the Tuscaloosa campus, nine more faculty and staff members tested positive from Oct. 9-15, bringing the cumulative total to 270 since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In its latest announcement, the system reported that 13 of the 518 isolation rooms are currently occupied on the Tuscaloosa campus.

More than 1,300 faculty, staff and students at UA, UAB and UAH participated in sentinel testing this week, translating to three positive results systemwide. None of those positives were confirmed on the Tuscaloosa campus.

As of Saturday, the Alabama Department of Public Health reported 7,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases for Tuscaloosa County, with 707 identified over the last two weeks. The COVID-19 death toll in Tuscaloosa County is reported to be at 114, with an additional 18 listed as probable.
