Gregory Chapman, M.D., a professor in UAB's Division of Cardiovascular Disease and a cardiologist at the UAB Cardiovascular Institute, will present his new book, "A Strong & Steady Pulse: Stories from a Cardiologist," at a benefit at the Hokes Bluff Library on Saturday, according to a press release.

The event is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., the release stated. Copies of Chapman's book will be available for purchase, with proceeds from the sales going to the Hokes Bluff Public Library. Donations may be made in cash, by check or digitally through PayPal or Venmo. Chapman will sign copies of his book and be reading a selection from it.

"A Strong & Steady Pulse" is a collection of medical essays and patient vignettes, the release said. Each chapter is based on real-life patients and experiences during Chapman's three decades as a cardiologist and professor of medicine. The book provides an inside look at the field of cardiovascular medicine.

"Writing this book has been gratifying and meaningful work," Dr. Chapman said in the release. "I have always used my stories as teaching tools in this profession, so I decided to put them into book form. My purpose through this book is to share beneficial cardiovascular and medical information with caregivers, patients and trainees so they can better understand cardiac disease and contributing risk factors."

Each of Chapman’s stories present a patient and their initial visit and then walks readers through his or her evaluation and the steps taken to determine the underlying problem, the release stated.

Topics addressed include the recognition and management of heart attacks, heart failure, arrhythmia, valvular heart disease, cardiac transplantation, broken heart syndrome, hypertension and the depression some people experience after a heart attack.

The emergence of the coronavirus and its impact on hospitals also is addressed in the book's epilogue.

In addition to being able to buy a copy Saturday, Chapman's book is available online on the University of Alabama Press website and on Amazon.com.
