LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – FOX 16 News is bringing back the yearly segment featuring history makers who have ties to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.

Dr. Moses Goldmon joined FOX 16 Good Day to shine a light on alumni Art Porter Sr. and Chris Johnson.

Art Porter Sr. was a musician. He attended Arkansas AM&N, now known as UAPB, to obtain his Bachelor of Science in musical education in 1954.

Porter became a performer and teacher of music in Little Rock, teaching at Horace Mann High School, Parkview High School and Philander Smith College through the 1960s.

He also had a musical talent show on AETN for 10 years and a syndicated series that featured the Art Porter Trio.

With the help of former President Bill Clinton, the Art Porter Bill passed allowing minors to perform at clubs with a guardian present.

UAPB highlights former school president, 1960s sit-ins

Chris Johnson is a Grammy Award-winning trombone player. He was awarded a full scholarship to UAPB and joined the university’s band, also known as the Marching Musical Machine of the Mid-South.

In 2018, Johnson performed alongside Beyonce at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. He also toured with Beyonce on the Renaissance World Tour and arranged music for a Grammy Award-winning album.
