Uber driver from Hobart, Indiana, who was shot in Cicero on Monday evening, has died

A Hobart, Indiana, man who was shot in the head while making an Uber pickup in Cicero on Monday evening has died, authorities said.

Joseph David Schelstraete, 38, was declared dead at 11:49 a.m. Wednesday at Loyola University Medical Center, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The attack occurred about 7:35 p.m. Monday at 23rd Street and 55th Avenue when Schelstraete was confronted by four armed individuals who ran south after the shooting, Cicero spokesman Ray Hanania said in an email.

Police were able to get a description of the attackers from witnesses and captured one person, a juvenile. Updated information on the other three was not available Wednesday evening.

There was a carjacking May 11 at the same intersection, and police are investigating whether the two attacks might be connected.
