Uber driver critically wounded in shooting Monday evening in Cicero

A 38-year-old man from Indiana was shot and critically wounded Monday evening in Cicero after he was called to the west suburb to pick up a ride-share passenger, officials said.

The man, who is an Uber driver, arrived at 23rd Street and 55th Avenue about 7:35 p.m. for a pickup, where he was confronted by four armed people, Cicero spokesman Ray Hanania said in an email.

The man suffered a gunshot wound to the head, Cicero police Superintendent Jerry Chlada Jr. said.

He was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he was in critical condition, being kept alive on life support, Chlada said.

After the shooting, the four attackers all ran south from the scene of the shooting. Police were able to get a description of the attackers from witnesses and set up a perimeter, capturing one person.

Cicero police have one suspect in custody and are tracking down three more suspects, Hanania said.

The suspect in custody is a juvenile, Chlada said.

There was a carjacking May 11 at the same intersection, and police are investigating whether the two attacks might be connected.
