UCF football monitoring Hurricane Ian, plans to host SMU on Saturday as scheduled

ORLANDO — UCF canceled classes on campus from Wednesday through Friday as Hurricane Ian prepares to make landfall.

As for the university's scheduled home football game Saturday against SMU, the show is still expected to go on.

UCF, in conjunction with the American Athletic Conference, will monitor the storm's progress and its potential impact in the Orlando area. Head coach Gus Malzahn said during his weekly press conference that the Knights are preparing like a regular game week ahead of their final AAC opener.

"We're just taking it day by day," Malzahn said. "We're going about our business like we're going to play the game and everything that goes with it.

"As we get more updates, we'll be able to make the best decision."

According to the National Weather Service's 5 p.m. update Monday, Hurricane Ian is expected to pass through Central Florida between Thursday and Friday afternoon.

Both UCF and SMU share a bye week on Oct. 8, creating a potential fallback plan. The Knights have a home game the following Thursday night against Temple.

UCF enters its final go-round within the AAC with a record of 3-1, defeating Georgia Tech 27-10 this past weekend. SMU handed the Knights one of their more lopsided losses in 2021, a 55-28 result in favor of the Mustangs last November.
