UConn men’s basketball gets commitment from Jaylin Stewart, a top-100 wing

Dan Hurley added another highly rated recruit to his haul from the Class of 2023, with Jaylin Stewart, who committed to UConn Friday.

Stewart, a 6-foot-6 small forward, wing type, comes from Garfield High in the Seattle area. He visited UConn last weekend and announced his decision via Instagram.

“I chose UConn because I feel like they made an extra effort to show that I was going to be a key piece in what they got going on,” Stewart told the website On3.com. “When I was on the visit I clicked with all the players and the coaching staff are already close to my family so it was the perfect fit for me.”

Stewart comes from one of the top high school programs in the state of Washington. He started as a freshman for Garfield and helped the program win its 14th state title in 2020. He joins three other four-star prospects, ranked in or near the top 100, from the Class of ‘23 — guards Stephon Castle and Solomon Ball and forward Jayden Ross. Analysts expect UConn to end up with a top-five recruiting class. Stewart is ranked No. 59 in the class by Rivals, 71st by 247Sports. Castle is ranked by most in the top 30 and Ball in the top 50. With Stewart and Castle, UConn, which had been focusing for several years on the East Coast, is expanding its recruiting reach.

The Huskies coaches watched Stewart extensively on the Nike EYBL summer circuit, including at the Peach Jam in Atlanta. He averaged 16.4 points per game. At the high school level, he helped Garfield win 22 in a row before losing in its state quarterfinals last March.
