UConn women add walk-on guard Autumn Chassion to roster; all 11 players now on campus

The UConn women’s basketball team has added a freshman walk-on, 5-8 guard Autumn Chassion, to its 2020-21 roster, the program announced Saturday.

Chassion joins five other incoming freshmen who signed with UConn this winter and rounds out the squad’s roster at 11. The announcement also stated that the entire team arrived in Storrs last week.

“I knew that when I was presented the opportunity to play at one of the most prestigious universities and play under the best coach in women’s basketball that it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I knew I had to take it,” Chassion said in a statement.

Chassion, who is from Lafayette, La., led Lafayette Christian Academy to four straight state championship games, winning three of them, while averaging 15 points and 10 assists per game as a senior. Per the Daily Advertiser, Chassion was a starter for her team since her sophomore year and, as of February, received an offer from LSU Eunice along with interest from other schools, including Loyola University New Orleans and two Ivy League institutions.

Her senior class finished with an overall record of 124-21, and she was also her high school’s valedictorian.

“Autumn is a competitor to the core,” Lafayette Christian Academy head coach Lexie Taylor told the Advertiser about Chassion. “That’s who she is. It is what she does. She competes, no matter what.”

Coach Geno Auriemma previously hinted at the possibility of adding a walk-on on the virtual coaches radio show. Chassion, who will wear No. 2, is the first walk-on he’s brought in since Briana Pulido and Tierney Lawlor.

With UConn’s 2017 recruiting class all either transferring or, in Megan Walker’s case, departing for the WNBA Draft and a pair of two-player classes over the next two years, Auriemma was left with only 10 scholarship players entering the 2020-21 season. Though his group is already guard heavy, Chassion will add some needed depth nonetheless.
