Former UConn women’s basketball legend and WNBA superstar Maya Moore officially announced her retirement from professional basketball on Good Morning America Monday.

A two-time NCAA champion, four-time WNBA champion and two-time Olympic Gold Medalist, Moore last suited up for the Minnesota Lynx in 2018. She stepped away from her career at its peak in 2019 to focus on social justice reform, determined to overturn the wrongful conviction of her now husband Jonathan Irons. Moore gave birth to their son, Jonathan Hughston Irons Jr., in February.

“I think it is time to put a close to the pro basketball life,” Moore said. “I walked away four seasons ago, but I wanted to officially retire. This is such a sweet time for us and our family and the work that we’ve done, I want to continue that in this next chapter. I want to continue to be present at home for my community, for my family, for little baby, for Jonathan, but also doing work with Win With Justice, our nonprofit, to continue to raise awareness about prosecutorial reform and how we can have safer and healthier community. So that’s what I’m moving into, hanging it up.”

Moore and Irons are releasing a book, Love and Justice: A Story of Triumph on Two Different Courts, this week.

“On behalf of the Minnesota Lynx organization, I want to congratulate Maya on an incredible basketball career,” Lynx coach and President of Basketball Operations Cheryl Reeve said. “We will always cherish her time in a Lynx uniform and we wish her the best as she continues to pursue this next chapter of her life.”
