UConn women’s basketball team announces four-year series with Louisville

UConn women’s basketball head coach Geno Auriemma adopts an ‘anyone, anywhere, anytime’ philosophy when it comes to scheduling. The Huskies proved that once again with the announcement of a four-year series against Louisville on Tuesday.

The Huskies will host the Cardinals on Saturday, Dec. 16, 2023. The venue and time for that game has not yet been announced. UConn will also host Louisville during the 2025-26 season, and will travel to Louisville in the 2024-25 and 2026-27 seasons.

Louisville has emerged as a national power under head coach Jeff Walz, having posted 13 straight seasons with at least 22 wins. The Cardinals went 26-12 last season and reached the Elite Eight before falling to Caitlin Clark and Iowa. They’ve reached at least the Sweet 16 in each of the last three years.

The Cardinals would have again been considered a national title contender next season if star guard Hailey Van Lith had committed to return, but she entered the transfer portal following the season and has since visited national champion LSU.

UConn is 18-3 all-time against Louisville, including twice defeating the Cardinals in the national championship game. The Huskies capped off a perfect season in 2009 with a 76-54 win over Louisville and trounced them, 93-60, to take home the title in 2013.

The two programs last faced off in 2021 in the Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase, with then No. 6 Louisville beating No. 7 UConn, 69-64.

UConn’s 2023-24 nonconference schedule also includes home games vs. Ball State, Dayton, Maryland and Notre Dame and road contests against Minnesota, NC State, South Carolina and Texas. The Huskies will also play two games in the inaugural Cayman Islands Women’s Basketball Tournament, with a field that includes LSU and Virginia Tech.
