UGA defensive back and former Grovetown football star Marcus Washington Jr. to transfer

Marcus Washington, Jr.'s time in Athens appears to be nearing its end.

The Georgia football defensive back announced via social media that he's entering the transfer portal.

"After thoughtful prayer and discussion with my family I have decided that my time as a Bulldog has come to an end," he said in the tweet. "I have enjoyed my time spent with the Bulldog Nation, my teammates, my coaches, and and the staff here at UGA! My lone season in Athens was a magical one that I will never forget, however it is time for me to explore other avenues for me to continue my academic and athletic career. With that being said I will be entering the transfer portal with 4 years if eligibility remaining!"

Washington only saw the field in the 33-0 win over Samford on Sept. 10. Originally a 2023 prospect, Washington reclassified to the 2022 class; graduating from Grovetown High School a year early to begin his college football career in Athens.

He started as a sophomore and junior at Grovetown as an impact player in the defensive backfield, the second year under his father, former Georgia linebacker Marcus Washington, Sr., as defensive coordinator. In those two seasons Washington racked up 90 total tackles and eight pass deflections. He was also a standout on the Warriors' track team, taking fifth place in the 100-meter dash as a sophomore.
