Weeks after arriving in Athens, Georgia freshman outside linebacker Marvin Jones Jr. did some crowdsourcing for one of his favorite off-the-field pursuits.

“Fishing spots in Athens?” Jones asked his more than 8,500 Twitter followers.

Dentist Brian Hall answered the call that day on June 24 for Jones, who is from Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Hall, a UGA graduate and lifelong Bulldogs fan who’s practiced in the area for nearly 30 years, offered up the use of his pond at his home on Elder Road in Bishop. He showed Jones a photo of the pond and a 10- pound bass that a neighbor caught. That prompted three eyeball emojis from Jones.

“I texted him and went there the same day,” Jones said in a video posted to the Classic City Collective’s Instagram account.

Hall’s pond covers an acre and a half and offers fishing for bass and bream.

Jones arrived with Bulldog defensive lineman Warren Brinson. He told Hall that two more defensive linemen, junior Jalen Carter and freshman Christen Miller, would come by later.

They fished from the bank of the pond. Hall was able to spend a couple of hours with Jones on that first visit.

“Marvin’s a really good fisherman,” Hall said. “He’s from Miami and he really knows what he’s doing fishing.”

Hall has paddle boats at his pond. He said the 6-foot-3, 310-pound Carter wanted to take one for a ride, but that the 604, 295-pound Miller wanted to join him on board.

Hall didn’t think it would be able to hold that much weight.

“He gets on it and that thing went two inches out of the water,” Hall said. “It was about to go under, but they went out in it and caught fish.”

Later that week, Jones made a return visit and brought Nolan Smith, the senior preseason All SEC outside linebacker, and freshman defensive lineman Mykel Williams.

Smith said he’s taken Jones fishing about three times since he arrived on campus. He brought Miller, who played at Cedar Grove, along with them.

“He’s supposed to be a guy from Atlanta; he doesn’t know how to fish,” Smith said. “Marv can fish really well. That boy can pull anything out of a pond.”

Smith said that Hall, a Clarke Central grad who is 54, offering the use of his pond is something that he’s grown accustomed to from Bulldog fans.

“That’s one of the biggest things if you come to Georgia,” Smith said. “You’ll be taken care of by the people in Georgia.”

Jones, who starred at American Heritage and plans to major in business at UGA, has his own fishing rod and brought one extra. Hall provided some rods to borrow for others who needed them.

Jones' father is former Jets linebacker Marvin Jones Sr., a two-time All-American at Florida State. Marvin Jr. racked up 18 sacks in his final two high school seasons while recording 101 tackles.

Hall said Jones caught a bass that was nearly four pounds that he proudly posted on Twitter.

“I didn’t weigh it,” Jones said, “but it was probably the second biggest one I’ve ever caught.”
