Those in or near Kent with a medical need have a new option for urgent care.

University Hospitals recently moved its urgent care center in Kent to East Main Street, near the Kent State University campus.

The UH Urgent Care opened its doors over the summer summer and had its official ribbon cutting last month.

Since opening, the facility has done a brisk business, seeing an average of 40 patients a day, practice manager Teresa Neff said.

The center treats children and adults.

Available services include X-rays, drug test screenings, EKGs, physicals, vaccines and treatment for injuries and illnesses.

"Honestly, we see a little bit of everything," Neff said. "A lot of people like to use us because you don't need an appointment."

However, appointments can be made if someone wishes, Neff added.

Neff said the urgent care had been at Devon Place off state Route 43, near the Bob Evans and Mike's Place, and included an urgent care and a free-standing emergency room. However, the ER closed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rick Cicero, the vice president of strategy and partnerships at UH, said that urgent care centers provide a convenient way for a person to seek medical treatment quickly and inexpensively.

"From a patient standpoint, a patient can just pull up and walk right in," Cicero said. He added that the urgent care is especially useful for those who may not have a primary care doctor and want care quickly.

Along with the Kent location, University Hospitals operates the UH Streetsboro Health Center Urgent Care off state Route 14. Cleveland Clinic Akron General also has an Express Care walk-in clinic location on state Route 43 in Kent.

The Kent location is one of the first UH Urgent Care location to offer patients the ability to get several types of prescriptions, such as antibiotics, Cicero said.

Neff said that while they do not take insurance for medications, the prescriptions are usually around $5 or $10.

"They don't have to go to the pharmacy and make that separate trip," she said. "This is especially beneficial on late Sundays or holidays, when a pharmacy might not be available."

Another advantage with the new location is the proximity to the city's fire department and EMS services, Neff said. If patient need more care than the urgent care could provide, then they can be quickly transported by ambulance.

UH Urgent Care Kent is located at 1005 E. Main St. It is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. For details, call 330-440-0360 or visit https://www.uhurgentcare.org/locations/kent-oh/?location=4016.
