UIL BOYS STATE GOLF: Defending 1A champ Sterling City tied for third after Day 1

AUSTIN -- If the Sterling City High School boys golf team is going to defend its UIL Class 1A state title on Tuesday, the Eagles will have to make a dramatic comeback in Round 2.

The Eagles combined to shoot a first-round score of 368 Monday at Plum Creek Golf Course in Kyle, which has them tied with Highland for third.

Jonesboro shot 338 for a 19-stroke advantage over Miami.

Last year, Sterling City won the second state title in program history and the first since the late 1990s.

Utopia's Nolan Steelman posted a score of 74 to take a one-shot lead over Miami's Ben Thrasher in the medalist standings. Jonesboro's Jeffrey Morse is sitting third with a 76.

Sterling City sophomore Casey Miller led the Eagles with an 88 in the opening round, followed by senior Jace Clark (89), junior Kas Johnson (90), junior Weston Blackwelder (101) and senior Thomas Mackie (101).

"We didn't play as good as we have the last couple of rounds at regionals and district," Sterling City coach Trey Sisco said. "There's a few things we need to fix here and there and a little course management. Hopefully (Tuesday) we can go out and shoot better and see what happens."

The Eagles coach talked about the conditions on Day 1.

"It was windy and it got pretty hot, but that's the same for everybody," Sisco said. "The course has some areas where you can get in trouble and we found a bunch of that (Monday). We took some big numbers today.

"Even my top players took some big scores on some holes. We've got to minimize those (Tuesday). That kind of took those guys off what they've been shooting the last couple of weeks. So we've just got to clean that up and be smart around the course and score a little better."

Meanwhile, at the 2A tourney at Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin, the Mason Punchers are currently in seventh place, 45 shots off the lead.

The Punchers finished with a total of 380.

Lindsay is leading the 2A tourney with a 335 total, followed by Vega (339) and Goldthwaite (346). Forsan is currently fifth with a 355 total.

Morton's Ethan Boggs posted a round of 75 for a two-shot lead in the 2A medalist standings, followed by Latexo's Cordell Knox (77). Hamilton's Tyner Haile, Vega's Casen Brorman and Vega's Kylan Richardson are in a three-way tie for third with rounds of 78.

Forsan's Kade Nichols is in a five-way tie for ninth with an 81. Goldthwaite's Cole Hermesmeyer and Jackson Patrick are in that group.

Mason's top performers on Day 1 were sophomores Cy Nobles and Wyatt Row, who both recorded rounds of 88.

Punchers senior Spencer Morris opened with a 101, followed by junior Ivan Wofford (103) and sophomore Ryne Todd (104).

The 3A tourney is being held at Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin, and Sonora freshman medalist Dylan Ford opened with a round of 80, which has him just four shots off the lead.

Callisburg's J.J. Walsh, Lago Vista's Knox Renfro and Keene's Bailey Dooley are in a three-way tie for first in the 3A medalist standings with scores of 76.

In the 3A team standings, Callisburg combined to shoot 316 for a five-shot advantage over defending state champion Brock (321). Lago Vista is currently third with a 325.
