New Deal, New Home athletes just miss podium at UIL state track meet
AUSTIN — Catherine Green outperformed her seeding, but fell just short of winning a medal Friday at the UIL state track and field meet at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
The New Deal senior threw 38 feet, ½-inch to place fourth in the Class 2A girls shot put. Anson's Meadow Gallentine won the event at 43-11¼, with Refugio freshman Ciara Tilley (39-10½) earning silver.
Albany's Kiana Roberson (38-4¼), the wildcard entrant, finished in front of Green for the final medal.
Green entered the day with the seventh-best qualifying mark from regionals. She threw 35-4½ at the Region I-2A meet to finish second behind Forsan's Aleena Nelson. Nelson placed sixth Friday.

Class 5A field events
It was a disappointing Friday for Monterey's Steven Runels. The senior tied for fifth in the 5A boys high jump after clearing 6-4.
Runels came in tied for the top seed after clearing 6-10 to win the Region I-5A title.
"I feel like I definitely could've jumped better," a dejected Runels said. "It was just me and the bar. My approach wasn't right. That's about it, really."
Port Arthur Memorial's Keandre Jones took gold at 6-8.
Monterey teammate Hebrew Hunter got sixth in the 5A boys triple jump. The junior went 46-½ on his first attempt, which proved to be his best. Princeton senior Gavin Champ won at 48-5½.
Lubbock-Cooper's Sofia De Groot, a former New Mexico Class 1A state champion, placed ninth in the 5A girls triple jump at 37-11¼. The top mark was 42-9¼ by Pflugerville Hendrickson's Suzan Ogunleye.
