New Deal, New Home athletes just miss podium at UIL state track meet

AUSTIN — Catherine Green outperformed her seeding, but fell just short of winning a medal Friday at the UIL state track and field meet at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

The New Deal senior threw 38 feet, ½-inch to place fourth in the Class 2A girls shot put. Anson's Meadow Gallentine won the event at 43-11¼, with Refugio freshman Ciara Tilley (39-10½) earning silver.

Albany's Kiana Roberson (38-4¼), the wildcard entrant, finished in front of Green for the final medal.

Green entered the day with the seventh-best qualifying mark from regionals. She threw 35-4½ at the Region I-2A meet to finish second behind Forsan's Aleena Nelson. Nelson placed sixth Friday.

New Home's Ethan Hollinshead did one better than his seeding, finishing fourth in the 2A boys shot put. He threw 54-6¼ on his third attempt. All of his five legal throws went at least 52-6¾.

Marlin's Praiyer Jones won the event on his final throw at 56-8¼. Shiner senior Douglas Brooks, who also earned silver in the discus, was shot-put runner-up at 56-0.

Ropes' Kutter Partington placed fourth in the 2A boys 110-meter hurdles, 0.01 seconds behind the bronze medalist. The senior Partington, who won bronze last season, finished in 15.30 seconds Friday.

Class 5A field events

It was a disappointing Friday for Monterey's Steven Runels. The senior tied for fifth in the 5A boys high jump after clearing 6-4.

Runels came in tied for the top seed after clearing 6-10 to win the Region I-5A title.

"I feel like I definitely could've jumped better," a dejected Runels said. "It was just me and the bar. My approach wasn't right. That's about it, really."

Port Arthur Memorial's Keandre Jones took gold at 6-8.

Monterey teammate Hebrew Hunter got sixth in the 5A boys triple jump. The junior went 46-½ on his first attempt, which proved to be his best. Princeton senior Gavin Champ won at 48-5½.

Lubbock-Cooper's Sofia De Groot, a former New Mexico Class 1A state champion, placed ninth in the 5A girls triple jump at 37-11¼. The top mark was 42-9¼ by Pflugerville Hendrickson's Suzan Ogunleye.

Other Lubbock-area results

► Sundown's team of Allie McCormick, Micaela Hernandez, Ariel Hernandez and Natalie Urias placed fifth in the 2A girls 800 relay in 1:46.76.

► Plains had a pair of state competitors in the 2A boys 800. Sophomore Jhoan Menjivar finished sixth (2:02.55), just ahead of junior Roque Garcia (2:04.24). The duo, along with Adrian Contreras and Tyler Vargas, placed eighth in the 1,600 relay.

► Smyer's Mollie Norman threw 110-6 in the 2A girls discus to finish in sixth place.

► Farwell freshman Isabella Jaime was seventh in the 2A girls 400 in 1:01.72.

► Tahoka freshman Grace Reglin finished seventh in the 2A girls 200 in 26.08.

► New Deal senior Leric Eaton placed eighth in the 2A boys triple jump at 43-4½. He was also eighth in the 400 in 51.06.

► Monterey's David Mora finished ninth in the 5A boys 1,600 in 4:35.73.

► The New Home foursome of Brooklyn Smith, MaKenna Johnson, Morgan Addison and Kristen McWhirter took ninth in the 2A girls 400 relay in a time of 51.36.

► Sundown's Koy Torres got ninth in the 2A boys 1,600 in 4:48.24.
