At the University of Illinois Springfield, it is our vision to be a pathway to opportunity, a catalyst for change and a space of possibility where learners become ethical and passionate scholars, leaders, and citizens capable of transforming their local and global communities.

On Friday, we officially kicked off the 54th academic year at UIS. This year is certain to be full of excitement and new beginnings as we have welcomed students from more than 40 states and over 50 countries. As students from near and far begin or continue their journey at UIS, it is with great excitement that the Division of Student Affairs gets to assist them with ensuring an enriching experience.

Like our incoming students this fall, I also am new to Springfield and UIS. Entering new environments can be daunting, but they also provide a unique opportunity to bring fresh perspectives and directions. As we stand on the threshold of a new academic year, I am excited to share with you our unwavering commitment to fostering student success and strengthening the bond between our campus and the community we proudly serve.

The 4Ps: Places, people, path, purpose

At UIS, our guiding principle is the holistic development of our students. For the Division of Student Affairs, our approach to support students as they embark on this journey will be centered around the 4Ps. Helping students find their places, their people, their path, and their purpose. The 4Ps provide a roadmap for not only enriching the student experience but also contributing to the growth and prosperity of our wider community.

Places: In a world that often seems vast and at times overwhelming, we understand the importance of creating spaces where every student feels they belong. We will provide an inclusive and welcoming environment that encourages exploration and connection. From residence halls that serve as second homes to campus events that celebrate diverse cultures, we want every student to find their place within our community.

People: As vice chancellor for student affairs, I am acutely aware of the transformative power of meaningful relationships. We will create opportunities for students to connect with peers, faculty, staff, and mentors who inspire and support their personal and academic growth. Through mentorship programs, student organizations, and collaborative projects, we hope our students can find their people — the individuals who will shape their journey and leave an indelible mark.

Path: Navigating the academic landscape can be both exhilarating and challenging. Our commitment extends beyond traditional classroom instruction. We will provide support in various areas that will aid students in identifying the route on which they should be. From career counseling, competitive athletics to experiential learning opportunities, students will have many options toward a path of academic excellence and professional success. By aligning passions with pursuits, we empower students to discover and pursue their unique paths.

Purpose: I take immense pride in our dedication to instilling a sense of purpose in our students. We believe that education is not just a means to a career but a pathway to making a meaningful impact on the world. Through service-learning initiatives, community engagement projects, and leadership development programs, we will equip students with the tools they need to find their purpose and contribute positively to our community's well-being.

Our commitment to the 4Ps is not merely a framework but will be a lived reality that shapes every aspect of campus life. By providing an environment rich in opportunities for personal growth, intellectual exploration and community involvement, we ensure that our students are equipped to thrive both within and beyond UIS.

Your invitation to be part of the journey

At UIS, we recognize that our community is a wellspring of knowledge, experience, and passion. We extend a heartfelt invitation for community members to engage with us on campus in ways that resonate with their interests. Whether through attending enlightening lectures, cheering at Prairie Stars athletic events, or contributing to community service initiatives, your presence is invited and welcomed.

As our campus continues to transform into a hub of learning and connection, we encourage you to explore the myriad opportunities for engagement. Your insights, perspectives, and contributions are invaluable, serving to enrich the experiences of both students and fellow community members.

Let us embrace the spirit of collaboration and shared purpose. Together, we have the power to propel students toward excellence, nurture connections that bridge divides, and forge a future marked by promise and transformation.
