UIS launches institute for race, gender, sexuality and social justice

A new Institute that will address diversity, equity, inclusion and justice issues across central Illinois is in the works on the campus of the University of Illinois Springfield.

The institute will offer academic programs that focus on Race, Gender, Sexuality and Social Justice in the fall.

"We’re just thinking about where we need to be going in the future, where our students are coming from, what kind of world are they going into and how can they be prepared for that," said Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Mariam Wallace. "We wanted to give people a chance to grapple with different questions and have those difficult conversations so we can meet the students where they are in the world."

Faculty from existing programs within the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences will lead DEIJ workshops, conduct regular research talks, and invite community members who work on issues of social justice to share their knowledge.

“The institute provides a space to coordinate DEIJ-related efforts and initiatives across campus as well as a structure to develop and strengthen partnerships with the community locally and regionally,” said Lan Dong, interim dean of the college.

Faculty also plans to create an online depository of DEIJ publications and presentations for public use, in addition to offering online courses and virtual events. The institute will also develop professional opportunities for students, including scholarships, internships and career connections.

University of Illinois director of public relations Blake Wood said the institute had already been thought of before the Supreme Court's recent decision to strike down affirmative action. University of Illinois System leaders say they will carefully review the specifics of the decision and ensure that its practices and policies continue to comply with federal and state laws.

“Vital to our mission is a welcoming environment and a shared set of core values, including respect for differing and diverse points of view and for those who express them,” according to a press release. “The University of Illinois System will continue to open its doors wide to all deserving students - including those for whom opportunities may have been unfairly limited.”

Wood said the university believes establishing the new Institute for Race, Gender, Sexuality and Social Justice will appeal to both prospective and current students. Its launch follows UIS Chancellor Janet Gooch’s establishment of the Chancellor’s Committee for Belonging, Dignity and Justice in January.

The Illinois Board of Higher Education approved the institute on a temporary basis during its June 7, 2023, meeting. The status of the institute will be reassessed by the board in 2028.
