UK coronavirus variant confirmed in Madera County

Madera County health officials have confirmed one case of the U.K. coronavirus variant within the county.

- The California Department of Public Health has confirmed a Madera County resident tested positive for the UK variant of COVID-19. Local health officials said today the individual completed their isolation period and is no longer infectious contacts have been identified and are currently in quarantine.

All approved vaccines are believed to be effective against this variant, but Madera County Public health officials say, while cases are decreasing in the county, the discovery of the UK variant is concerning. It is thought to be more contagious and more likely to cause severe illness. Just last week, three cases of the UK variant were discovered in Fresno County.
