UK Police Catch 100 Motorists Using Mobile Phones While Driving

At least 100 motorists were caught using their mobile phones while driving in South Yorkshire, England, early in 2024 during a two-week road-safety operation carried out by police in unmarked vehicles, South Yorkshire Police announced on April 5.

“Officers had access to the National Highways unmarked Heavy Goods Vehicle tractor unit, that allows officers to carry out their duties from a greater height, seeing inside higher vehicles, as well as those below them,” police said.

Videos released by police shows various motorists behind the wheels of moving vehicles appearing to text and scroll on mobile devices.

“Of those caught, 46 were making a call, 37 were texting, 11 emailing and six were scrolling social media," said Roads Policing Inspector Matt Collings. “I urge you to think, is it worth it? Everything can wait until you’ve finished driving.”

In total, 254 drivers in the area were “dealt with” for slew of road offenses, including not being in proper control of their vehicle, not wearing a seat belt, driving without insurance, and driving without due care, according to police. Credit: South Yorkshire Police via Storyful
