UK weather forecast: Britain could enjoy warmest day of the year as temperatures soar to 20C this weekend
Britons can look forward to their daily outdoor exercise allowance this weekend as balmy weather is predicted to bring the warmest day of the year.
A cold weather front will see wintry showers and strong winds up to 75mph hit Scotland on Thursday, before below-average temperatures for the time of year will see the mercury struggle to get past 9C or 10C across the whole of the UK on Friday.
But this is set to change by the weekend, when balmy weather will bring some relief during the coronavirus lockdown as temperatures soar up to 20C.
Bonnie Diamond, a Met Office forecaster, said: “Thursday and Friday is going to be colder but as we go into the weekend it’s going to get warmer and Sunday we could quite likely see the warmest day of the year so far.
“Over the weekend it will be generally dry and settled for most and southerly winds will bring warmer temperatures.
“Saturday looks like a day of hazy sunshine and feeling warm, with some showers around and some heavier showers across Scotland.
“By Sunday it’s going to start to get quite warm.
“It will generally be a dry day with hazy sunshine. It will feel breezy everywhere, particularly in coastal areas, but it will be a warm breeze.
“Temperatures could reach about 20C in some places, such as the border between Wales and England, while it’s going to be widely in the mid-teens and feeling quite warm in some spots.”
The mercury is expected to dip again into the start of next week, but most places should hopefully see milder temperatures compared to the first two weeks of lockdown.
“By Monday we’ve got a low pressure system moving across to the north of the UK introducing westerly winds,” said Ms Diamond.
“It will still be quite breezy and temperatures will be mild, about 15C to 16C maximum, so not as warm as Sunday but probably still just above average for the time of year.
“The strongest winds will be across the northern half of the UK but in the south plenty of sunshine and staying dry. That looks like it’s set to continue at least for the first part of the week.”
Thursday is expected to be a breezy day with a risk of showers in places, while temperatures will struggle to get up to 15C and will likely feel even colder in the wind.
Friday will continue to feel cold across the UK, with temperatures struggling to reach above 9C or 10C, which is below average for the time of year.
There will be some sunny spells and showers around, but these will mainly be light.
