UK zoo names cockroaches after exes for Valentine’s Day

Would you name a cockroach after your ex?

That's what the Hemsley Conservation Centre is letting people do

in the spirit of Valentine’s Day

Location: Fairseat, England (SOUNDBITE) (English) HEMSLEY CONSERVATION CENTRE OPERATIONS MANAGER, HENRY WEEDON, SAYING:

"For Valentine's Day you can name a cockroach after an ex partner, if you've had a particularly nasty break up and you need a pick me up, it's a good way to have a little giggle to yourself or with your friends, but also if you wanted to name it after a politician maybe this year then you're more than welcome to, all names are welcome, and it's all to raise money for the projects that we're doing here at the zoo and helping us care for all the animals here."

Naming a cockroach requires a $2 donation

which will fund conservation projects at the zoo

"So far this year we've had a few hundred names, we were actually asked if we could launch the programme again, we weren't planning to this year but we had so many requests from people wanting to name cockroaches from all over the world that we brought it back again for 2022, and yeah we're hoping to have a couple of thousand by Valentine's Day which would be absolutely fantastic."
