Ukraine to begin preparations for negotiations on joining EU, decision to be finalised at summit

The Ukrainian side will declare the beginning of preparations for negotiations on accession to the European Union at the Ukraine-EU summit on Friday.

Details: "Today, the president of the European Commission officially presented the president with a report on Ukraine's readiness for negotiations and the compliance of Ukrainian legislation with European legislation [the European Commission's response to the second part of the questionnaire]," Stefanishyna said.

"We also announced [at a joint meeting of Ukraine's government and the European Commission] that we are starting to evaluate and prepare negotiating positions for all 35 chapters of the future EU accession agreement," she added.

According to Stefanishyna, this is a "breakthrough decision" that will be finalised after the results of the Ukraine-EU summit on Friday.

The deputy prime minister also added that tomorrow's event will be devoted to the discussion of Ukraine's "victory issues".

"The 'peace formula', the issues of the peace summit, increased sanctions pressure, and, of course, political reforms will be discussed under the implementation of the seven recommendations of the European Commission and the expectations we have for the spring, when the European Union will present its assessment," she explained.

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, expressed the opinion during her visit to Kyiv that Ukraine will become a member of the European Union.

It is expected that after the summit, the leaders of Ukraine and the EU will confirm in writing that the future of Ukraine and its citizens is connected with the European Union. But in reality, the prospect of Ukraine joining the EU remains remote.
