Ukraine blasts Russia's ‘peacemaker’ facade in Transnistria conflict

Ukraine advocates a peaceful settlement of the Transnistrian conflict with respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova, Ukraine’s Foreign Office stated on Feb. 28.

"MPs" of the unrecognized republic appealed to Russia to "accept Transnistria into the Russian Federation” on Feb. 28.

Ukraine is closely monitoring the developments in Moldova's Transnistrian region, urging for the peaceful resolution of issues between Chisinau and Tiraspol, free from harmful external influences. "The 5+2 negotiation format has been compromised by the presence of Russia, an aggressor state unfits to serve as a peacekeeper," the Ministry stated, reaffirming Ukraine's commitment to actively participate in the process with the goal of reintegrating Moldova.

Ukraine is and will remain an active participant in the Transnistrian settlement process, identifying the reintegration of the Republic of Moldova as its main goal, and advocates for the speedy withdrawal of Russian troops from the Transnistrian region of Moldova.

"Ukraine has been resisting Russian aggression for ten years and for more than two years has been resisting Russia's full-scale invasion,” Foreign Ministry stated. “Our country knows the horrors of war and the price of peace better than anyone else. We are making and will continue to make every effort to preserve stability and strengthen security in Europe, as well as to prevent any attempts by Russia to destabilize Moldova or other countries in our region."

The 5+2 diplomatic platform, designed to resolve the Transnistrian conflict, involves Moldova, Transnistria, Russia, Ukraine, the OSCE, with the European Union and the United States as observers. Amidst these tensions, Transnistria's unrecognized officials have sought "protection" from Russia, citing pressure from Moldova. Russia is "carefully" considering the request of the unrecognized Transnistria, the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia claimed.

Moldova does not expect escalation and destabilization in the Transnistrian region after the so-called congress, Moldovan government press secretary, Daniel Vodă, said.

Washington firmly supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova and is closely monitoring the situation in unrecognized Transnistria, The US State Department stated.
