Ukrainian forces have breached the first line of Russian defenses in southern Ukraine in some areas of the front, Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar told Ukrainian TV broadcasters on Aug. 4.

However, she indicated that it doesn’t mean that Ukrainian troops can now pour into the enemy rear unobstructed.

She added that Moscow already had to commit reserves from its professional troops to try and plug the holes in the frontlines in eastern and southern Ukraine.

Citing unnamed Western officials, The New York Times reported on Aug. 2 that Russian forces on the frontlines in Ukraine are “overwhelmed” and facing numerous challenges. U.S. officials claimed that Ukrainian forces are clearing paths through Russian lines of defense, starting to push enemy troops and artillery back.
