Ukraine is a climate war, says refugee protester in Davos

STORY: Originally from Kharkiv, Ilyess El Kortbi said he had spent years protesting on climate issues before war broke out in Ukraine.

"Now war in Ukraine happens because of fossil energy. Because Europe is dependent on fossil energy," he told Reuters.

He was one of around 30 protesters who gathered in the Swiss alpine city to draw attention to climate issues as the World Economic Forum drew to a close.

Asked whether he was disappointed by the turnout, organizer Niklas Todt said he recognized that people were tired of "crisis after crisis after crisis after crisis".

Their protest echoed previous ones at the last WEF meeting in January 2020, when Swedish activist Greta Thunberg warned participants that the world was "still on fire".
