Ukraine counts on ‘powerful EU decision’ in December, Zelenskyy tells EU Council chief in Kyiv

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with European Council President Charles Michel in Kyiv on Nov. 21, the head of state said in a Telegram post that included a video of their meeting.

Michel arrived in Ukraine on the Day of Dignity and Freedom.

"A good meeting with the President of the European Council Charles Michel," President Zelenskyy said.

“And on such an important day for our country – the Day of Dignity and Freedom. I am pleased with all the results of our great work, of all of us – the parliament and the government – to implement all the recommendations of the European Commission. We look forward to a powerful decision in December.”

The head of state also thanked Michel for the support and assistance given by the EU to Ukraine. He stressed that Ukraine hopes for further financial and military assistance, the press service of the President's Office reports.

On Nov. 21, coinciding with the tenth anniversary of Ukraine's Revolution of Dignity, President of the European Council Charles Michel arrived in Ukraine for an official visit.

The presidents of Moldova, Maia Sandu, and Germany's Defense Minister Boris Pistorius also traveled to Kyiv on the anniversary of the revolution.

During his visit, Pistorius announced a new military aid package for Ukraine, with a total value of EUR 1.3 billion ($1.4 billion).

On Nov. 8, 2023, the European Commission recommended starting negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU. It is expected that during the EU leaders' summit in mid-December, a decision will be made to start formal negotiations on Ukraine's membership in the bloc.

However, Reuters previously reported that the decision to start negotiations with Ukraine on joining the European Union may not be madeat the EU leaders' summit in mid-December as expected.
