Ukraine expects that it will receive a delivery of Turkish-made Fırtına self-propelled howitzers, General Staff spokesperson Brigadier General Oleksiy Hromov said in an interview with Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform on July 5.

“New systems are expected to arrive that have not yet been used by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, such as the Fırtına,” Hromov said.

The T-155 Fırtına (Storm) is a Turkish version of the K9 Thunder 155 mm self-propelled howitzer, originally developed by South Korea.

Turkey purchased a license for the production of this system from Seoul back in 2001. The Turkish weapon differs from the South Korean version as it has an upgraded turret and chassis, and a Turkish fire control system.

The self-propelled howitzer has a 155 mm gun with a barrel length of 52 calibers. The system has a maximum firing range of 40 kilometers and can fire six shots per minute. It is capable of firing at targets both from closed fire positions and with direct guidance.

In 2021, the Militarnyi online portal reported that Ukraine had offered to produce a 6TD-2 diesel engine for the Fırtına self-propelled howitzer.
