Ukraine’s Kichenok advances to Australian Open women's doubles semifinals with Latvia’s Ostapenko

Ukrainian tennis player Lyudmyla Kichenok advanced to the women’s doubles semifinals at the 2024 Australian Open on Jan. 23.

Kichenok and her partner Jelena Ostapenko (Latvia) defeated the French duo of Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic in two sets in the tournament quarterfinals.

Both teams lost one of their serves in the first set, with the winner being determined in a tie-break — 7-6. The second set concluded with a victory for Kichenok and Ostapenko - 6-4.

Kichenok and Ostapenko are set to face Gabriela Dabrowski (Canada) and Erin Routliffe (Australia) in the semifinals.

This marks Kichenok and Ostapenko's third appearance in the doubles semifinals in a Grand Slam tournament, following Wimbledon and Roland Garros in 2022.

Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska will play against Linda Nosková (Czech Republic) in the singles draw quarterfinals.

Nosková has not acknowledged Russian aggression against Ukraine as a war.
