The blues and yellows started out strongly, and in the 3rd minute Oleksandr Zinchenko scored from the penalty spot. But he took his kick before the whistle blew, so the referee disallowed the goal.

Less than a quarter of an hour had passed from the beginning of the game, and Ukraine, the vising team, threatened the opponent's net several times, but Ruslan Malinovskyi, Viktor Tsyhankov (twice) and Roman Yaremchuk could not beat the home team’s goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey.

The Welsh goalkeeper helped his team wait out Ukraine’s attack and look for a chance to open the scoring. Bale took a free-kick, and Andriy Yarmolenko unsuccessfully tried to clear it, diverting the goal into his own net.

At the end of the first half, Hennessey again saved his team after Zinchenko's kick, and a little later, the referee failed to give a penalty on Yarmolenko, who was fouled in the Welsh penalty area.

In the 49th minute, Wales had the opportunity to increase their advantage, but Aaron Ramsey failed to close on Keiffer Moore's low cross. The Ukrainians responded with shots from Tsyhankov and Yaremchuk.

The exchange of chances continued, and after a missed opportunity to score by Daniel James, Ukraine’s Malinovskyi also failed to score.
