Ukraine’s MFA reacts to Italian senator’s claim that international community ‘should make decisions for Ukrain

Commenting on Romeo’s statement, the spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Oleg Nikolenko, said on Oct. 27 that the comments were purely the senator’s personal opinions.

Romeo, an Italian senator from the Lega Nord party, said Ukrainians should not make all decisions about their future on their own, and that in his opinion, the international community should play a certain role in this – taking into account the country’s interests.

“Of course, we must respect the will of Ukrainians, but it would be better to say that the international community will decide in the interests of Ukraine,” Romeo said.

“The statement of the Italian senator reflects his personal opinion,” Nikolenko told NV.

“(Italian) Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has clearly articulated Italy’s position: both about the need to continue supporting Ukraine amid Russian aggression, and the indisputable right of Ukrainians to determine their future.”

Nikolenko also said that almost every country has politicians trying to please Putin.

“At the same time, they should realize that by spreading Russian narratives, they’re encouraging Russia to continue its crimes against Ukraine,” he said.

Nikolenko added there will be no peace in Europe without peace in Ukraine.

“That’s why Italian senators should also be interested in the victory of Ukrainians – if they really care about the interests of their own country.”

Earlier Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said the only way to achieve peace between Russia and Ukraine is to help Kyiv defend itself by military means.

She added that while Italy’s supply of arms to Ukraine is not critical to ending the war, it is vital for Italy to maintain its international standing.
