Ukraine pushes back Russian forces at several points around Kherson, says Western intel
“Estimate Russia has about 20,000 troops in the Kherson pocket,” he tweeted.
“Heavy caution: it is too soon to determine if Ukraine attack is succeeding, however.”

Earlier the U.S. Department of Defense said that Ukrainian troops had advanced in Kherson Oblast, while the Russian invaders were retreating in some cases.
Deputy Head of the Kherson regional council, Yuriy Sobolevskyi, said on Aug. 29 that the Ukrainian troops had achieved success in three districts in the temporarily occupied territories of Kherson Oblast.
The Ukrainian military’s South Operational Command Pivden earlier said that is would not immediately announce the liberation of settlements in the south so as not to expose them to retaliatory enemy strikes.

Prior to that, the command said that the Armed Forces of Ukraine had launched counter-offensives in several directions in southern Ukraine.
Ukraine had for several weeks prior to the counter-offensive signaled that it would attack in the south, and Russia rushed troops from other parts of the front to the area of the city of Kherson on the western banks of the Dnipro River.

Ukraine then attacked the bridges crossing the Dnipro near Kherson, damaging them and making it difficult for the Russians to move supplies and heavy military equipment across them.
