Ukrainian MPs also condemned the genocide of the Chechen people by Russia in a corresponding document.

The Chechen Republic of Ichkeria was established in 1991, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Its forces defeated Russian colonialism in the first Chechen war in 1994-1996, but was destroyed by Russian forces in the Second Chechen War, which lasted from 1999 to 2009. It had never been previously recognized by any other nation-states.

Draft law No. 8132 on the recognition of Ichkeria was supported by 278 votes.

Oleksiy Danilov, the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, tweeted that “Free Ichkeria will start the process of decolonization of the Russian Federation and the destruction of the sub-empire.”

“Chechens are worthy descendants of the fighters for Independence – from Shamil (Shamil Basayev, Chechen soldier, leader of the Chechen movement for freedom from Russia, one of the leaders of the Republic of Ichkeria) to Dudayev (Dzhokhar Dudayev, the first president of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria),” he added.
