Ukraine’s security service investigates 1,500 treason and espionage cases

At the same time, the number of explicit Russian agents and spies, involved in intelligence gathering and sabotage, is around 600 individuals, according to the security service.

SBU Press Secretary Artem Dekhtyarenko said charges of high treason were mostly levied against civil servants. Official records show there were 160,000 civil servants in Ukraine’s state apparatus, as of late 2022.

Dekhtyarenko noted that in summer 2022, SBU has uncovered a group of Russian agents in the Cabinet and Chamber of Commerce, who were supplying Moscow with intelligence about Ukraine’s border defenses and personal data of Ukrainian law enforcement officers.

On Jan. 26, an internal SBU investigation, jointly with Ukraine’s State Bureau of Investigations (SBI), has identified a Russian agent in the security service’s ranks.
