Energoatom is also working with U.S. manufacturing concern Westinghouse to create their own fuel production capabilities, Kotin reported.

“We are already producing the heads and shanks of the fuel cartridge, which were licensed by the American company,” he said.

“That is, we will produce half of them ourselves, and the other half will be supplied by Westinghouse.”

He stated that Energoatom plans to begin using Westinghouse-made fuel for Ukrainian nuclear stations, instead of Russian fuel.

In April 2022, it was reported that Energoatom had opted out of buying Russian uranium for nuclear power plants. At the time, Ukraine’s NPP operator stated that it was ready to consider increasing purchases from European-based nuclear fuel consortium Urenco.
