Ukraine waits to call Iran plane crash human error
Ukraine investigators say it’s still too soon to say if human error was to blame for the shooting down of a Ukrainian passenger airliner near Tehran in January.
That challenges the findings of Iran’s own Civil Aviation Organisation (CAO), which has already stated a lack of communication between officials and a misaligned radar system led to the plane being downed, killing all 176 passengers on board.
The Ukrainian foreign minister said Tuesday (July 14) that many questions remained unanswered and that they need quote “a large number of authoritative, unbiased, objective answers about what happened."
A ground-to-air missile was fired at the plane back in early January shortly after take off.
Iran called it a "disastrous mistake" and put the error down to heightened tensions with the United States.
The black box recordings are still being examined by a team of experts from countries including the U.S., France, Canada and Ukraine.
An Iranian delegation was due to arrive in Kiev later this month to discuss compensation, after Ukraine said a previous figure was not satisfactory.
