Ukraine wants to join EU within next two years, PM Shmyhal says

“We have a very ambitious plan to join the European Union within the next two years. This is why we expect that this year, in 2023, we may already have a preliminary stage of negotiations,” he told the publication.
“The problem? No one within the EU thinks this is realistic,” Politico said.
They wrote that French President Emmanuel Macron said last year that “decades” may be needed for Ukraine to accomplish this goal.

“Even the EU leaders who supported the granting of candidate status to Ukraine at their summit in June last year, admit in private conversations that the prospect of the country’s actual accession to the EU is stretched out for several years,” the article says.
In early February, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and her fellow European Commissioners plan to visit Kyiv for consultations with the Ukrainian government. According to Politico, the delegation may include 10 to 15 EU commissioners.
A Ukraine-EU summit is scheduled for Feb. 3 in Kyiv. Among the key issues that will be discussed at the summit is the integration of sectors of the Ukrainian economy into the single European market.
