Ukraine's defence minister hopes for fighter jets to be supplied to Ukraine

Oleksii Reznikov, Minister of Defence of Ukraine, has said that his country hopes to receive military aircraft that could be a "game changer" in its fight against Russia after receiving tanks from allies.

Details: The minister read his "wish list" of weapons that Ukraine needs: fighter jets, other combat aircraft and long range missiles.

At the same time, he emphasised that Ukraine is not interested in strikes on the territory of Russia, but only in the destruction of ammunition storage posts and command posts of the Russian army.

The minister said that he hoped for two more weeks of negotiations on fighter jets for Ukraine. He believes in a positive decision, as it was with air defence systems and long range artillery.

Background:

• Oleksii Danilov, Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine, hinted that international partners would provide Ukraine with multifunctional F-16 light fighters.

• Yurii Ihnat, spokesman for the Ukrainian Air Force, said that securing new multifunctional fighter jets was a top priority.

• President Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes that after the decision to supply tanks to Ukraine, his country should get the aircrafts, and this is an important task.

• The manufacturer of American F-16 fighters said it was ready to supply its aircraft to European countries, which could re-export the fighter jets to Ukraine.

• A contingent of military officials is quietly pushing the Pentagon to approve sending F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine to help the country defend itself from Russian missile and drone attacks.
