Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry said that the statement made by Republican US Congressman Paul Gosar was unacceptable. Gosar questioned whether it is appropriate for the US to continue supporting Ukraine and claimed Ukrainians were no more than "cannon fodder".

Quote: "US Congressman Paul Gosar’s claim that Ukrainians are ‘cannon fodder’ is absolutely unacceptable. The US knows very well the values that Ukraine is fighting for: freedom, advancement of democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights. To question US support for Ukraine is to give Putin the green light to continue murdering Ukrainian people and destroying  democracy."

Details: Nikolenko underscored that the approach of elections in the US is not reason enough to turn politicians into populists who are out of touch with reality.

"Elections come and go, but an international reputation undermined by misleading claims about Russia’s war against Ukraine will remain. We are certain that statements made by individual congressmen will not affect the US’s ongoing bipartisan support for Ukraine," Nikolenko added.

Background: Far-right Republican Congressman Paul Gosar (Arizona), one of the most ardent supporters of former President Donald Trump in Congress, recently issued a letter inviting Ukrainian and Russian presidents to hold "peace talks" in Arizona.

In a separate statement on his website, Congressman Gosar said that "The world has seen enough death and destruction between Russia and Ukraine. The Western countries appear cavalier to using Ukrainians as cannon fodder and disinterested in de-escalation."

Gosar is one of several Republican congressmen who voted against the multi-billion dollar package of economic and military aid for Ukraine. He claimed that American aid is financing a "conflict" that it "should not be taking part in".

Gosar also supported Republican lawmakers’ attempt to block the confirmation of President Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 elections.

The US Congressional elections will take place on 8 November.
