Ukraine's combat losses are five times less in the south and eight times less in the east, compared to those of the Russian forces, Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar told Ukrainian TV broadcasters on July 4.

According to Maliar, different methodologies suggest that there may be more losses during an offensive than during defense, but Ukrainian losses during the offensive have not increased. Malyar said that she visited a military hospital on July 4 and discussed this issue with the medical staff – "the situation has not worsened."

"The losses in the south – on average, we lose about five times less...; in the east – a week ago, we had about eight times less losses," said the deputy minister.

She explained that the main goal for Ukrainian commanders is to preserve the lives of their troops, even if it comes at the expense of making rapid advances on the battlefield.

Maliar also mentioned that the main fight is currently taking place in eastern Ukraine, especially near Lyman and Bakhmut. She noted that the Defense Forces are advancing in the south and in the east of Bakhmut in Donetsk Oblast, suggesting the city is once again contested, after falling to Moscow’s forces following months of relentless assaults.
