Ukrainian animated movie ‘Mavka’ collects $680,912 at box office on first weekend
Over 189,000 tickets were sold for the movie on March 4-5. In comparison, the Ukrainian historical drama “Shchedryk” (released on Jan. 5, 2023, during emergency blackouts in Ukraine), which Film.ua Group considers to be successful in cinema distribution, sold over 84,000 tickets and earned UAH 10.6 million ($289,866) in eight weeks of screening.

Mavka is also a blockbuster in comparison to other animated releases – the “Puss in Boots 2” cartoon collected $112,870 (about UAH 4.1 million) in its first weekend on release in Ukraine, with a total of $1 million (about UAH 39 million), according to Box Office Mojo. The cartoon was released in Ukraine before the Christmas holidays, on Dec. 22, 2022 (also during blackouts).
“Mavka” was released in Ukrainian cinemas on March 2, simultaneously with the release in North Africa and the Middle East.

In total, “Mavka” has been sold for screening in more than 20 countries, including the United States, Canada, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Romania, Croatia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Serbia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Hungary, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, Finland, Greece, and Mongolia.
Work on “Mavka,” created based on the “Forest Song” poetic play by Ukrainian writer Lesya Ukrainka, continued for seven years. The project is adapted to the home animation genre and is based on images from Slavic myths and legends.
