"Wagner PMC mercenaries are the main Russian force in this direction. Sparing nothing, they are losing significant strength and becoming exhausted. Very soon we will take advantage of this opportunity, like we did near Kyiv, Kharkiv, Balakliya and Kupyansk," he said.

The Russian troops persist in attempting to seize Bakhmut at any cost, despite great personnel and equipment losses, Syrskyi added.

Ukrainian defenders are holding their ground in Bakhmut under constant artillery and aircraft fire with superhuman resistance, courage, and bravery, he said.

"In particular, the units of the 93rd, 10th, 57th and 5th Brigades that are now defending our homeland in the east of the country," he wrote.

The fight for Bakhmut has been raging since July 2022. The Russian army continues its attempts to encircle and seize the city without success, Ukraine's General Staff reported.

Russia has been throwing more trained units of Wagner mercenaries and regular Russian forces into the battle for Bakhmut.

The continuing defense of the eastern city was unanimously supported at the Ukraine's High Command meeting on March 14.

The defense of Bakhmut is a “key to the stability of the defense of the entire front,” according to Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Valerii Zaluzhnyi.
