Ukrainian artist Serhiy Zhadan cheers as Pushkin monuments fall across Ukraine

The renowned Ukrainian poet, writer, musician, and volunteer Serhiy Zhadan expressed delight as Kyiv removed a monument to the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin in the capital’s Shuliavka District.

The poet previously posted a previously taken selfie against the backdrop of the Pushkin monument on Beresteiskyi Avenue. Celebrating this significant step, Zhadan congratulated Kyiv residents, humorously asking, “Dear Kyiv residents, how did this happen???”

In a later post near the Kyiv National Music Academy, Zhadan drew attention to the institution still bearing the name of Russian composer Tchaikovsky, noting, “By the way...”

Zhadan has been travelling across Ukraine, seeking out Pushkin monuments, and calling for them to be dismantled by the local authorities in cities like Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhya, Poltava, Chernivtsi, and others.

Monuments to Pushkin in particular have been targeted for removal in Ukraine because some of the works of the Russian poet glorify Russian imperialism.
