On his way to the bronze medal, the Ukrainian defeated Algerian Falleh Midoune, American Dennis Novo, and German Janne Haubold.

The 30-year-old karate fighter then lost to Egyptian Youssef Badawy, who made it to the final, giving the Ukrainian a chance to compete for the bronze medal via consolation bouts.

Previously, Ukrainian karate star Anzhelika Terliuga faced the controversial denial of her right to compete in the World Championships final after a Bulgarian protest over a timekeeping error forced a partial replay of the semi-final fight she had already won.
