Ukrainian Mother Thanks Slovakian Police After 11-Year-Old Son Arrives Alone at Border

A Ukrainian mother has thanked border staff in Slovakia for helping her 11-year-old son, who arrived at the country’s border with nothing but a plastic bag, his passport and a phone number written on his hand, overnight on March 4-5.

In a video published on March 6, the boy’s mother, Pisecka Julia Volodymyrivna, thanked Slovakian border staff and volunteers for receiving her son and explained that she could not travel with him as she was a widow and unable to leave the boy’s grandmother.

Pictures published by the Slovakian police on March 5 show the unnamed 11-year-old boy smiling alongside border staff and volunteers upon his arrival from Ukraine. The source said the boy had arrived alone but thanks to a phone number written on his hand they were able to contact relatives who collected him.

The source said that the young refugee was from Zaporizhzhia, home to the nuclear plant that was taken under Russian control on March 4. Credit: Policia Slovenskej Republiky via Storyful
