Ukrainian Parliament calls on international community to punish Russia for terrorism at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant

The Verkhovna Rada [Ukraine's Parliament, - ed.] has appealed to world organisations, parliaments, and state governments to condemn the act of nuclear terrorism committed by Russia at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) in Enerhodar.

Details: 301 members of the parliament supported the resolution.

The Verkhovna Rada has called on the international community to apply sanctions against the entire Russian nuclear industry, in particular against the state corporation Rosatom, the enterprises and organisations that are part of it, as well as against the managers of Rosatom.

The Parliament also called on the UN and the IAEA to organise a joint security mission to the ZNPP.

Quote: "According to the document, the parliaments and governments of the member states of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are invited to appeal to the General Conference of the Agency regarding the suspension of the privileges and rights of the Russian Federation as a member of the IAEA, as well as the deprivation of Russia's right to vote at the meetings of the IAEA Board of Governors and opportunities to participate in various cooperation programs".

Background:

  • On Monday, Energoatom reported that the ZNPP operates with the risk of violating radiation and fire safety regulations, as the Russians opened fire at a number of buildings, in particular, the fire department.

  • At the UN Security Council session on 11 August, the US indicated that in order to guarantee the ZNPP safety, Russian troops should be withdrawn from there, that area should be demilitarised and the IAEA experts should have the access to work there.
