OLENA BARSUKOVA – WEDNESDAY, 12 OCTOBER 2022

Ukrainian journalists Mstyslav Chernov and Yevhen Malolietka have become the laureates of the French Bayeux Calvados-Normandy Award for their images shot in Mariupol.

They have received the award for war correspondents in two categories, as a statement on the award’s website says.

Mstyslav Chernov, the videographer and photojournalist, won in the Video Image nomination and became a runner-up in the television category.

Yevhen Malolietka, the photo correspondent, who had also worked in Mariupol since the start of the full-scale war, triumphed in the Photo category.

"Together with my colleagues, I have discovered works of undoubted perfection. The level was so high it was hard to decide between the nominees!" Thomas Dworzak, the chair of the Award Jury and a German war photographer, commented.

This year, journalistic materials from Ukraine received the greatest number of nominations for the Awards.

Nominees from Sudan, Burkina Faso, and Afghanistan also received prizes.

The Bayeux Calvados-Normandy Award is an annual award for war correspondents, founded in Normandy, France, in 1994.

Earlier this week, Mstyslav Chernov and Yevhen Malolietka received the Elijah Parish Lovejoy Award for their courage in journalism.

This duo has won six prestigious journalism awards so far this year, including the Deutsche Welle Freedom of Speech Award, the Georgiy Gongadze Prize, the Knight International Journalism Awards, and the Biagio Agnes Prize.

Photos from Mariupol taken by Mstyslav Chernov can currently be seen in the Ukrainian House in Kyiv.

His exhibition, titled Spalakh (Flash): Ukrainian Photography Today, will last till 23 October.
