Ukrainian pilots test Swedish Saab JAS 39 Gripen fighters

Ukrainian pilots have completed their "orientation" test flights on Saab JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets, Sveriges Radio reported on Sept. 14, citing Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson.

"Orientation training has been completed, and according to the report I received from the Armed Forces, it went well," Jonson said.

"The experience gained from the orientation training will form the basis for determining whether the conditions are right for Gripen jets to be sent to Ukraine.

A Ukrainian technical team had already arrived in Sweden to prepare for a possible training mission, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Aug. 23.

On Aug. 19, reports emerged that Ukrainian military personnel were undergoing testing for the aircraft. Ukraine hopes to receive 16–18 Saab JAS 39 Gripen jets from Sweden.

The Swedish government will soon direct its armed forces to examine the possibility of transferring Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine, Sveriges Radio reported on Sep. 12, citing informed sources.
