Previously: On Tuesday, 1 August, the Soviet coat of arms was entirely removed from the Mother Ukraine monument.

The work on replacing the Soviet emblem with the Ukrainian trident should be finalised by Independence Day, 24 August.

For reference: Mother Ukraine is the tallest monumental sculpture in Europe. Built in 1981, it is located on the territory of the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in World War II.

Dismantling the Soviet coat of arms on the Mother Ukraine monument is part of the Trident of the Motherland project. The project was launched in 2022.

Background: In July 2022, Diia, a service of e-governance in Ukraine, conducted a survey. Back then, 85% of respondents supported replacing the USSR coat of arms with the Ukrainian trident.

The Trident of the Motherland project costs UAH 28 million [roughly US$765,000]. However, public funds were not used for its implementation since private investors and various contributors fund it.

Recently, the Mother Ukraine monument will reportedly not only have its coat of arms changed to the Ukrainian trident but will also be renamed.
