Ukrainian war film honored with top directing prize at prestigious Locarno Film Festival

The Ukrainian film Stepne won the award for Best Director at the 76th Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, the Ukrainian State Film Agency reported on Aug. 13.

Director Maryna Vroda received the Pardo Award for Best Director for her movie Stepne. This is the director's first feature film.

In her speech, the Ukrainian director thanked the jury members and the entire international film crew. Vroda also mentioned the filmmakers who are currently at the frontline and the team members who were killed during the full-scale Russian invasion.

The film Stepne depicts a few days in the life of an elderly man who returns to his Ukrainian village of Stepne to care for his mother in her final days. It stars Oleksandr Maksyakov, alongside Nina Antonova, Oleh Prymohenov, and Radmila Shcheholeva in the main roles as the protagonist spends time with his ailing mother before she passes.

The movie was co-produced by Ukraine, Germany, Poland and Slovakia. Maryna Vroda is the winner of the Palme d'Or at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival for her short film Cross.
